L-Citrulline.

What is L-Citrulline?

Citrulline, an α-amino acid, takes its name from "Citrullus," the Latin term for watermelon. While gastroenterologists first named and described it in the late 19th century, Japanese researchers Yotaro Koga and Ryo Odake isolated it from watermelon in 1914. Mitsunari Wada of Tokyo Imperial University later refined its characterization in 1930. Its chemical formula is H2NC(O)NH(CH2)3CH(NH2)CO2H.

How does L-citrulline work?

  • Enhancing blood vessel dilation has the potential to improve both blood pressure regulation and circulation to tissues.

  • Research indicates that prolonged consumption of L-citrulline by individuals with heart disease or at risk of it can enhance their arteries' ability to dilate.

  • Supplements of citrulline may lower blood pressure, especially among those with hypertension.

  • Citrulline can amplify the increase in growth hormone (GH) levels following exercise, potentially enhancing performance.

  • Additionally, this amino acid may improve erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction, likely due to its ability to enhance blood flow.
